Using this tool to create an expansion joint (also known as a "relief" or "sliding" joint) is a professional technique that helps prevent chaotic cracks in the corners.

How it works:

Goal: To separate the plaster layer on the wall from the plane of the ceiling (or adjacent wall, if they are made of different materials).

Process: When the gypsum plaster has dried slightly but is still workable, a saw is used to cut a thin line precisely in the corner to the full depth of the plaster layer.

Result: If the building settles or temperature fluctuations occur, the micro-crack will appear precisely in this clean cut rather than as a "spider web" across the entire surface.
